Growing Conditions
Place your watermelon bed in a sunny location with well-drained, loose, rich soil that has a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Give your watermelons at least 6 to 8 feet of space between plants because planting them too close discourages the growth of large melons and encourages vegetation growth. The best temperatures for growing watermelons are between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but above this temperature range, the plants could drop their flowers, and bland melons result from consistent temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit during the growing season.
Things To Do During Watermelon Growth
While the fruit matures on the vine, there are several things you can do in the garden to ensure your melon grows to be large and sweet. Pull up any weeds in your watermelon bed as soon as you see them, but if you cover the soil around the watermelons with mulch, you can water less and forget worrying about weeds. When the melons develop, set out a layer of straw under each to keep the melons dry and from touching the soil, which could encourage rotting diseases. Without rain during the growing season, water your watermelons with up to 2 inches of water every seven to 10 days. Stop watering once your watermelon gets to its fullest size to ensure a full-flavored, sweet melon. Every two to three weeks while the watermelons grow, side dress the plants with aged compost for feeding.
